Saving Honley's Magdale Dam

Help secure Magdale Dam for future generations to enjoy

Magdale Dam has been a part of Honley Village Community Trusts' life since 1993 - a place where generations have come to walk, pause and connect with nature.  Once a Textile Mill Dam, it's now a thriving wildlife haven. You might spot herons standing quietly at the waters edge, flashes of blue from kingfishers, or families of ducklings and goslings finding their way across the dam.

It's a simple place, but a special one.

Right now, a serious leak is putting all this at risk - the structure itself, the surrounding habitat, and the peaceful space so many people rely on.

We've tried to repair the dam once before, but those fixes haven't lasted. this time, we're taking a careful, expert-led approach to make sure we protect it properly for the long term.

The full project is expected to cost around £150,000 and will be delivered in phases

Phase 1 (completed):  Working with a specialist structural engineer who understands both dams and the delicate ecological balance around them (£5k)

Phase 2 (Underway): Developing detailed technical designs so the work can be properly tendered (£7-10k). Technical drawings expected beginning for July 2026

Phase 3: Go to market & appointing the right contractor to carry out a lasting repair (1-2 months)

Phase 4: Undertake work & complete (c£130k) - (1 month)

Why this matters

Magdale Dam is more than water and stone. It plays a quiet but important role in the local environment and community;

  • It supports a rich and delicate ecosystem - protecting habitats from birds, insects and aquatic life, and helping biodiversity thrive.
  • It allows us to care for the landscape in a sustainable way, so it's still here for future generations to enjoy.
  • It creates opportunities for learning - from school visits to nature walks, helping people of all ages connect with the outdoors
  • It offers a calm, accessible space that supports wellbeing - somewhere to walk, reflect and breathe
  • It brings people together, through shared care for a place that belongs to the whole community, supported by groups like Honley Village Community Trust and River Holme Connections.

How can you help

We're raising funds through grants and community donations to move through each stage of the project. Every contribution - no matter the size - helps protect this special place and everything it supports.

Lets come together to protect Magdale Dam, for today and the future
