Magdale

A beautiful conservation area, preserved for the enjoyment of the community.

Did you know that Magdale dam used to be a textile mill dam? Now it's a beautiful conservation area that Honley Village Community Trust (HVCT) is committed to preserving for the enjoyment of the community.

One of our earliest achievements was saving Magdale Fields from becoming a housing development! We're so grateful to have received a long-term loan with favourable terms from an anonymous donor to make this possible.

Magdale land was purchased as part of Honley Village Community Trust's efforts to protect and enhance the local environment and biodiversity. The land is an important natural habitat for a range of species and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. By acquiring the land, the Trust was able to ensure that it would be preserved for future generations to enjoy and to carry out projects aimed at improving the local environment. Additionally, the land is also used for community events and activities, providing a space for people to come together and enjoy the outdoors.

HVCT commissioned a survey from JCL Ltd. to check on the safety and condition of trees in the area in early 2018. While there was no urgent action needed, some trees will required management work over the coming 6-12 months, such as pruning and reducing to an 8-12 meter stem to ensure they're safe and healthy. This work continues to be carried out to protect and conserve the natural landscape and provide great habitats for the local wildlife.

A big thank you goes to all our volunteers for helping us keep Magdale beautiful and safe for all to enjoy. It’s a huge task and it wouldn’t be possible to maintain the land without them.

Maintaining Magdale Fields and Magdale Dam is a significant yearly expense for Honley Village Community Trust. However, this cost is mitigated by the dedication and hard work of our volunteers.

If you're interested in joining our efforts and making a positive difference, we meet us at the Cemetery Chapel on the second Sunday of every month at 10am. Alternatively, you can contact Steve at 07717 766071 for more information. Your help is greatly appreciated!
